Need help with your home?

Help Missouri assists qualifying Missouri households with home repairs and direct financial aid. Here's what we cover, who qualifies, and how to apply.

What we cover

Two kinds of assistance

Home repairs

Repairs to homes in deteriorating condition. Our leadership comes out of the general construction field, so we can assess the real problem and fix it rather than patch it.

Direct financial assistance

Aid for Missouri citizens facing a time of need, where a modest amount of help at the right moment keeps a household stable.

Eligibility

Who qualifies

We follow the poverty guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Most households we help have an annual income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. Find your household size in the chart below.

Over the line? Apply anyway. Our board can approve assistance for households above 150% where there are special circumstances, case by case. If something about your situation doesn't fit a chart, tell us about it on the form and let us decide.

You confirm your household on the form — there is nothing to send in. Not sure whether you qualify? Apply anyway; we'd rather look at your situation than have you rule yourself out.

How to apply

Requesting assistance

Fill out the form below and we'll be in touch by phone. It takes a couple of minutes and there is no cost to be considered. You can also phone, email or mail your request instead.

Proof of income

The more you can send, the faster we can move

We have to confirm income before we can help. You don't need all of the documents listed below — one is usually enough, and the more you can send up front, the sooner we can get to you.

Before you photograph anything, cover the Social Security numbers. Yours, your spouse's, and any listed for children. A finger or a strip of paper works. We never need them.

If you don't file taxes, that's common and it's not a problem. A benefits award letter, recent pay stubs or a bank statement work just as well — anything on the list below is accepted.

If you can't send anything, that's completely all right. Plenty of people can't get to a copier, don't have a printer, or don't have the paperwork to hand. Fill out the form below, give us a phone number that reaches you, and we'll call and work it out together. Nobody is turned away for not having documents.

Anything on this list helps

Send what you already have. Don't go to trouble or expense chasing a document down.

Tax documents

  • Page 1 of last year's tax return (Form 1040) — lines 9 and 11, with the Social Security numbers covered
  • W-2 or any 1099
  • SSA-1099, the Social Security benefit statement mailed each January
  • IRS Verification of Non-Filing Letter, if you don't file

Benefits letters

If you already receive any of these, the State has checked your income and a copy of the award or approval letter tells us what we need.

  • SNAP (food stamps)
  • MO HealthNet or Medicaid
  • SSI or SSDI
  • TANF
  • LIHEAP or energy assistance
  • WIC, free or reduced school lunch
  • Housing assistance or a VA pension

Current income

Best if your situation has changed recently, or if last year's figures don't reflect where you are now.

  • Your two or three most recent pay stubs
  • A letter from your employer with hours and wages
  • Unemployment or workers' compensation statement
  • Pension or retirement statement
  • Recent bank statements
  • A layoff or termination notice

What happens to your documents. When we come out to look at the property, we go over the originals with you, hand them straight back, and write down what we saw on a one-page form our representative signs. We don't photocopy, scan or keep your paperwork — that signed sheet is the only record we hold.

How to reach you

Fields marked * are required. Please never send us a Social Security number.

We'll ask for your street address later, when we arrange a visit.

Your household

We'll talk through proof of income when we call — nothing to send with this form.

Check the chart above for your household size, then pick whichever line fits.

What you need

Choose everything that applies.

We'll get back to you by phone.

We ask for as little as possible on purpose. What you send through this form is used only to review your request and is never sold or shared. Please never send us a Social Security number. Income paperwork is looked at once, in front of you, and handed straight back — we don't photocopy, scan or store it.

What happens next

After you apply

  1. We call you

We read what you've sent, then phone you with a few questions and sort out proof of income — what you already have, and what's easiest to get. If anything rules you out, we'll tell you on that call rather than leaving you waiting.

  2. We come and look

We visit the property, assess what's actually needed, and check your full return or other income documents with you there. We look, we hand everything straight back, and our representative signs a one-page record of what was seen. No copies, no scans, nothing filed away.

  3. Cases are prioritized

People being helped are chosen by financial status and quality of life — every situation is different. Because we're funded entirely by donations, we begin with those in greatest need.

  4. We get to work

When your request is approved, we'll contact you to schedule an assessment and start the repairs or arrange the assistance.

Other ways to apply

The form isn't the only route. Either of these works just as well.
